Midterm: Brian TimmreckSaturday night did not end until 3:30 a.m. for Brian Timmreck, but his Sunday morning begins bright and early.
Timmreck is a sophomore resident assistant in Marquette University’s Mashuda Hall, a freshmen and sophomore dormitory. Other than anticipating the Chicago Bears game, Timmreck is up and about before 10 a.m. for his radio show, “Sports Buzz." He and radio partner Charlie Brault will dicuss the upcoming NFL football games, and the previous night's MLB playoff games. That short night’s sleep is typical these days. Timmreck lives a very busy life, balancing that radio show and his RA responsibilities with school, family, a girlfriend, a fraternity, and fandom (he is a die-hard Cubs and Bears fan). As Timmreck and his radio partner leave the basement of Johnston Hall after their show, where the radio studio is located, a passerby tells the two, “Good job today, guys.” “Oh, thank you. Have a good day.” replies Timmreck. Although just a short, friendly exchange, it is indicative of the friendliness and respectfulness that Timmreck leads his life with. Respect is very important for him as an RA. He wants to be friends with his residents, he says, but sometimes he has to put that aside and do his job. As long as people understand that and respect his authority when needed, there should be no problems. Timmreck has the respect of Rashaad Lay, a friend and fellow RA. “Brian’s no doubt soft-spoken,” says Lay. “But he’s a very effective leader. He definitely steps up to the plate and he’s gonna get his word across. He’s going to make sure that he’s heard. He’s that type of guy.” Brad Lewin, a resident of Timmreck’s, has picked up on this attitude. “Brian’s a very good RA,” says Lewin. He’s respectful and relaxed, and he makes a point to form relationships with his residents, which not all RA’s do.” As for his affection for the Chicago Cubs, “He’s a very loyal Cubs fan,” says Lay. “The Cubs are his life.” Just don’t tell that to his girlfriend of four years. |
